“uuhahaha” “hehehehe” “hwahwahwa”. It’s a pity his laughter cannot be transferred as words. Those are not all. On SBS TV Mon/Tuesday Drama “Lord of the Dramas”, Hallyu Star Choi Siwon(25)’s weird and bright laughter makes you look at him twice. It’s just that shocking. Kpop Star Super Junior’s face Choi Siwon’s image is broken by this laughter.

But this new Choi Siwon without his original image is lovely. He must study his expression while looking into the mirror but he looks as if he has given up on how he appeared and act the funny expressions and over-exaggerated body gestures. It is also welcoming that he gave up his original image to try a new one.

“My voice went out while practicing that laughter (laugh). I studied it over and over again to get a laughter that could show HyeonMin’s character just from the laughter and no script line. On days with many laughing scenes, I get really tired. Kang Hyeon Min’s laughter that shows his character takes lots of energy. I sleep well on days like that. I get really worn out. Sometimes I get facial trouble by using too many muscles in the face. Haha.”

I recently had an interview with Choi Siwon. Kang Hyeon Min, the role he plays, is a top star but a star living off of his good image. His image is one of a warm-hearted luxurious man but his real character is one of a child’s- also stupid.

To this, Siwon says “Kang Hyeon Min is really realistic and real character”

“Everyone loves money and hates losing their image. And everyone also want to stand out while acting. I think it’s natural for celebrities to be different from being in front of his fans to being in front of his friends. Kang Hyeon Min just lacks self control. (laugh) I agree to many things while acting as Hyeon Min. Sometimes I want to edit the script too. I just don’t say so.”

He talked about the 3 scenes he wanted to edit out of the drama. The winter sea swimming scene, roaming in winter mountain, and getting slapped continuously by the actress.

“Winter sea? I saw the end of the world. No need for other words, I saw the end of the world… Haha… At that time, I had the same thoughts as HyeonMin. I really had hard time. At the scene, I really told PD-Nim “CG is good these days. Can’t we just do this with CG?” like Hyeonmin. But what can we do. If you can’t avoid it, enjoy it. In the slapping scene, I also got hit on the head two-three continuous times .. Oh Jee Un noona’s hands really hurt… (laugh)”

Kang Hyeon Min wasn’t a funny character at first it seems…

“It wasn’t like this at first. But I felt like I’d have a negative image if I was just money-hungry and negative towards people so I discussed it with the producers and went to comedy direction. Jang Hang Joon producer wrote many more comedy lines after seeing my adlibs in first two episodes.”

He said “Because I am doing what I like, I have no hesitation in acting as Hyeon Min”

“I hear from people around me that my role is very funny. I don’t make NGs because I find myself funny but people around me find me funny. I sometimes wonder if blood of Hyeonmin flows within me… Haha.. that was a joke.. I just want to become an actor that can do many roles. My dream in life is becoming a good son, good father, and good husband but being a good actor is also included. If I want to be a good actor, I have to be able to do roles like Hyeon Min too.”

But because of fearless HyeonMin role, his mother worries

“My mother was worrying that I acted like that outside. She asked if I was really like that. (laugh) I am a bit weird and sometimes I do act like Sa Oh Jung* but I am not like HyeonMin. I know how to be respectful to others. Fight with female lead? Unimaginable! Haha.”
(*To be like “Sa Oh Jung” means he hears a question but hears it weirdly and so answers it completely off topic.)

He debuted in 2005 and continued his steps toward becoming a great actor with a movie, “Oh My Lady”, “Athena”, and “Poseidon.” at beginning, he really showed “Foot Acting” (terrible acting) but now, he looks much more natural in front of the camera.

“When wine ages, you don’t see it with your eyes. Like you realize one sudden day it is just right, I think I can’t realize that I’m aging and becoming more ripe. When people ask if I am growing better, I can’t say I am becoming better but by going through life, I become better without realizing it. I am thankful many people love me.”

He said “With this role, I was able to catch my disappearing self.”

“I feel like I forgot the importance of cherishing relationships between people. I missed many things because I’ve been running only looking forward. With this role, I was able to look back. It’s a great harvest for me.”

Siwon said Hyeonmin is realistic character but drew a fine line between him and HyeonMin. Then what should real actors and stars show?

“I think that celebrities should become someone that can shine positively, affecting people positively. To be like that, you have to be honest. These days “fake” people can be seen easily. Viewers can see it all. I am thankful to receive great love. And to repay that love, I want to become a better actor.”
