2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards and the K-pop invasion

The night of November 29, the night the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) was held in Singapore, was a very special night for the Lion city.

It was probably the only time there were more K-pop stars in Singapore than anywhere else in the world besides Korea.

Following weeks of hype and excitement, the 2011 MAMA saw visitors from across the region descend on Singapore to catch the star-studded awards show.

Top Korean acts like SNSD, Super Junior and 2NE1 dazzled the crowd with their polished performances that night.

But the 2011 MAMA was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Korean pop culture has taken Singapore by storm over the past two years, with concert promoters here tripping over themselves to bring in K-pop act after K-pop act.

Tickets to concerts by SNSD and Super Junior routinely sell out in a matter of hours while fans would get to the venue hours in advance just to get the best spots in the mosh pits.

Some youth have also begun to emulate Korean fashion and taken to learning the language so they can speak to their idols.

Very few celebrities can stand up to the K-pop juggernaut, though a few still do.

Gazing into the crystal ball

Looking ahead, the K-pop wave looks set to stay – K-pop acts like Super Junior will perform in Singapore next year and it is already generating a lot of buzz.
