100531 K-pop group Super Junior’s concert causes stampede at Shanghai Expo, one [unconfirmed] death reported

A Korean pop concert held yesterday at the Expo Culture Center caused something of a stampede – reports of how bad it got vary, from the Epoch Time’s rumor that someone died to Shanghai Daily’s blithe announcement that the streets were “blocked by fans.”
If anything, this event was a warning about the power of K-pop: South Korea had planned a “classical and pop” concert that included insanely huge acts – Kangta, BoA and Super Junior, whose Shanghai shows sell out at 10,000+ seated stadiums each year they come. They’re so insanely huge that it almost makes you wonder what organizers were thinking when they arranged that show.
To get in, all you supposedly had to do was get an Expo ticket and line up at the center, an act which, if you’re a student, costs 90RMB. That’s way less than the Super Junior 2009 show’s ticket prices at Yuan Shen Sports Center, where the cheapest you could get in for was 480RMB. Unfortunately, there were only 5000 tickets available, and half of those had already been given to South Korean groups – a fact that eager Chinese K-pop fans hadn’t been made aware of.
By midnight on Saturday, according to Lianhe Zaobao, there were already 2000 people waiting outside the Expo’s Pudong door. Night watch people were blindsided. By the time the limited amount of tickets sold out (The Standard reports there were less than 500), roughly 5000 people were waiting around. When the crowd realized all tickets were gone, they began to get violent. A witness on the internet said that “several girls were stepped on and over by several guys. So messy, so messy, All the crying and yelling turned into one big wave. There were so many shoes. One girl even fell from the second floor.” The original post has already been harmonized on Tianya (though you can see it at the top of a google search here). Lianhe says the rumor that this girl died hasn’t been confirmed, though Hong Kong’s Apple Daily seems to be reporting it as fact (watch the YouTube video in that link or below, it has some images of police guards frantically running to contain the crowd).
What they both agree on is that hundreds of people were injured, whether from the pushing and shoving or from heatstroke. The Expo official report itself said that “In the event, several tourists suffered from heatstroke and abrasions and were rushed to nearby medical facilities at the park.” That’s a little more than “blocked by fans,” isn’t it?
Which actually makes me wonder – it seems that Shanghai Daily is still the only China-based paper that’s picked up on the news and their version was way more sanitized than the dozens of Mandarin reports in Chinese media. It almost feels like Chinese media controllers, for the first time I’ve noticed, are more scared about what the outside world thinks than what their own people think.

how sad. do super junior know it already?
Comment by 뀐지 ♥— May 31, 2010 #
Hope this isn’t true and that no ELFS got hurt. That would be awful ;/
Comment by Michell— May 31, 2010 #
i love super junior but i would not stampede over a girl for their ticket
:/ its really sad how this went thru. organizers should have been more careful, they KNOW how big suju is. i can already see how upset suju would be after hearing this
Comment by missmelor— May 31, 2010 #
Exactly. I love SuJu to death but I wouldn’t go crazy as to harm someone for the tickets. WTF is wrong with people?? There are some crazy fans out there, and what about the authorities?? If you know there is such a huge even get the place packed with securities!!
Comment by Nahby— May 31, 2010 #
actually to think of it… who said ALL those are ELFS?
why is the blame always on SJ when something like this happen? i mean KangTa, BOA and ALL THE OTHER KOREAN ARTISTS WERE THERE TOO! WHY ISN’T THEIR FANBOARDS ATTACKED.
what makes SUJU the group which is solely responsible for this mess??????????????
just because probably SuJu is the most well known and most representative of K-POP with their success, it doesn’t mean they are responsible for all the havoc k-pop cause. i think the chinese media need to be careful with their phrasing cause now all the fault are directed to our SUJU!!!
and btw… i really really (really to the power of infinity) agree with the reporter above. to hold a concert this scale, setting the price at only 90RMB per tickets and putting it in such a puny concert hall… the chinese official are asking for this to happen. they are the ones who are responisble.
have the media/authorities/antis (that attacked the fan board)actually calculated how many ppl went there just for fun, how many went there for Kangta, BOA , SHINEE, F(X),ect and how many actually went there for superjunior??? i mean of course it seems that ( most probably also ) that super junior had the most fans going, but who can prove that it was really the ELFS who are to be blamed for the chaos?
i m not saying that all ELFS are definitely quiet and obedient. but THE BLAME IT DEFINITELY NOT ON ALL/ ALL ON ELFS!
my point is what about fans of other artist? what about the Chinese government? the organizers?
so many people are responsible for this….
i can’t understand why only suju have to bare all this consequence!
Comment by vae— May 31, 2010 #
i heard the people in china are blaming super junior for this?

omg how awful n terrible the situation is! by right the organizers are the one who should control the whole situation from horrible circumstances like this. Super Junior must’ve felt really bad if they were to find out about this. it’s not their fault. but why do i think that the chinese media is putting the blame on the boys?? boo the organizers. u guys shouldn’t even be called “organizers”. u guys aren’t even organized! i hope the death reports are are not true n i’m looking forward to a more relieved news.

I think someone did die, i heard it on the news this morning. But anyways you cant blem super junior for it because firstly they weren’t the only ones performing there were other celebrities not just k-pop singers and secondly not all of the people were fans! It was because the 5000 tickets were free so everyone was so eager to get them, anyone would want tickets if it was free, but the people was just overreacting! I don’t get why they have to turn so violent just because they stopped giving free tickets after the first 500, it was free anyway, so if you get it your lucky but if not then tough luck! You’d probably be pissed off having to queue for such a long time but not be able to get the free ticket but i’m sure if you was a fan or if you wanted to see the concert so much then you would of just paid for a ticket!
Anyways hope this won’t effect Super Junior too much! Super Junior HWAITING!!!

Comment by Elaine— May 31, 2010 #
they cannot blame it on super junior only, because they are not the only korean singers who were invited. why they are always the one being blamed when something bad happens? it’s the start of their comeback, this year should be their year. but something bad had happened already? ELFs, please let’s do our best to protect them. let’s do our best so that they won’t get hurt. please don’t let their comeback this year be a waste. please. the more problems we encounter, the more we will be stronger and united. What does not kill us makes us stronger…FIGHTING ELFS!!!!:)

Note to self, never see a super junior concert in china … Gosh those fans can get pretty aggressive
Comment by bruinvaulter— May 31, 2010 #
The professional fans at Baidu Bar of SJ had done very well this time! Caused total chaos and dispute.
They had encouraged as many fans as possible to go to the Exp for the concert and they did it. Succeeded in making an huge dipute.
The misguiding techniques of SM was so so succesful in China that show the very dark side of them. I think it’s not the fault of the members of SJ , they are just the chesses of the higher level of SM. but it’s the SM’s. They did do the revengy and succesfully made many Chinese people, so of who previously had very good view of Korea began to hate them to death and saw their real face.
Are the young fans of Korean so crazy as those of China, who are young and brainwashed so as to forgot their identity and who they are? Why are they like that, these young people? There are so many low tricks of SM which caused all these bad things. Young people are easily to be misguided, yes, but the goverment will look into it and began to deal with this big problem. This is quite serious a problem.
SM may blame the one who organize the Expo and the truth is just there. And you have succesfully made so many Chinese to get to know your real face. SM’S business in China will not be that easy from now on.
If you want to do the bad things and eventually get the punishment by yourself, that’s the retribution. You shall see that.

Sorry..but I Can’t understand your point..can you expound a little?

not SJ’s fault.
primarily, SECURITY must be tight. They are the ones who control these people so the place will be safe.
and do i sense discrimination here?

How did people even think about blaming the guests? I fail to see how this can be Super Junior’s fault. Or BoA’s or Kangta’s fault for that matter. And no, I’m not biased.
Comment by Farah— May 31, 2010 #
honestly, i don’t think suju was at fault at all.
i mean, as much as i love suju,
i won’t go to the extend of getting so aggressive if i couldn’t get the tics! D:
why put the blame on the boys?
i’m sure they didn’t want such a thing to happen either
Comment by candyflo0ss— May 31, 2010 #
Ok don’t blame China ELFs. They’re also victims in here. The organisers initially agreed to sell 5000 tickets, but at the end they only sold 200 tickets. Many other unfair things happened to them, like the organisers tricking them to go to a room and locking them up for several hours and the police laughing at them and beating them up, asking them to leave. There’s just too many I don’t have the energy to list them out. So China ELFs went to complain at the expo website about how the organisers tricked them and treated them unfairly. Somehow, some people took it the wrong way and pushed the blame to Super Junior.
It’s definitely the organisers’ fault, but I doubt they will ever admit it. The expo is an event that promotes China to the world, so if they admit their mistake, they’re afraid it will sully China’s reputation. Besides, it’s much easier to blame Super Junior.
Please blame the right people.
Comment by Kay— May 31, 2010 #
The right people to blame might be those professional fans who misguided a large number of ordinary fans.
1. The words “5000 tickets” was spread out from the SJ bar, not from the official side of Expo
2. Profeassioanl fans at SJ bar encouraged as many fans as possible to go to the site of Expo. When the head of the SJ bar could get in contact with assistant or agent of SJ and knew very well how many tickets will be handed out at the site. Don’t tell me they know nothing about the real number.
3.Have they thought about one question: if 10,000 fans go to the site while there are only 5,000 tickets, what about the 5,000 fans who did not get the tickets? Wait outside? The information on whether the SJ member will or not go out to see the fans might be given previously at the SJ bar or reported by their fan club. What have they did? Agitate as many fans as possibles to go to Shanghai, go to Expo for the Sj concert. Is there any words on the SJ bar on the restrictions of the behavior and words of the fans, such as some basic rules to obey? To organize such a big “action”, they might organize it well and give useful advices to the young fans at the SJ Bar. Even like the words as to keep low profile and do not to harm the name of their OPPAA of SJ ?
4 . What is publcized at SJ Baidu Bar ? Nothing on guide the fans to love their country, nothing to call for attention on public welfare? Only love for their OPPA and their OBBA is the first, before their parents ,before the whole country.
So when the dispute happend, many of the fans did like these:do not care if their country’s name was harmed, their OPPA ‘s name is the first. Is anyone who is normal to care about their foreign OBBA most than their own country if they are not disguided and brainwashed at the Baidu SJ Bar?
5. Those who can type Chinese Characters are not all Chinese. When the SM ‘s every motion is cooperated so well at SJ Baidu Bar in China and the speech at the bar is just what the SM would like to see. If the SJ fans so capable, why are they cost their energy and money and time to hold the bag and are both scolded and desipised by Chinese poeple as well as Korean? Do not tell me they love their OBBA so much that the korean have good view on them.
6. The SJ is at Shaihai in March this year, nothing of that kind thing happened because of too many fans, why is May so different? Who want to see this and what aim? Why is the situation so serious when the fans have left a little sense on where the site is and what the inluence might be to the world? Who pan, who design, who act and who coached , who asked these fans to the site, who spreand the information on the price of the tickets and how many tickets there are to be prepared, who directed , who acted, who shot and who spread, the timing is arranged so well that all the world know that how crazy Chinese fans are about of their Korean OBBA, to the extent that not to think a little about their country’s name and the negative influence of the dispute might be.
Think deeper and thin twice, those who are brainwashed might be cleared up a little.
Comment by polly— June 1, 2010 #
“…like the organisers tricking them to go to a room and locking them up for several hours and the police laughing at them and beating them up…”
What the heck? Do you really think that the organizers LOCKED THEM UP and that the police were so low as to LAUGH AT THEM AND BEAT THEM UP? I don’t know where you live, but these kind of things are illegal, not to mention extremely difficult to achieve. Don’t you think someone would have noticed thousands of screaming fangirls all getting locked up?
I don’t blame Suju, and it could have been organized much better, but those fangirls are a bit too obsessed, don’t you think? Is it really necessary to lash out just because they couldn’t get tickets for the concert? I’m sure that even if 5000 tickets were available, there still would have been chaos because there were far more than 5000 fans there.
Comment by YWD— June 3, 2010 #
Honestly, it’s not Suju’s fault even if they were the ones attracting the crowd, it’s the organizer’s.
I’m Chinese and please don’t think all of us are blaming them. It’s just a group of crazy people who can’t admit that China did something wrong. AGAIN.
Comment by C— May 31, 2010 #
If you are Chinese, why do you think first that it must be China and the organizer who did something wrong? If you admit that you are Chinese, why do you so little faith and belief in your country and the ability of the organizer of Shanghai Expo? Could you ask yourself what you have done to solve all this social problems and make it a better world? Please think about how the foreigners will think about the Chinese when you yourself do not love your own country and not be proud of your own country as a Chinese.
China has such a large number of population. No one could represent the whole group. Someone did do things to make the world better, some just complain. You would like to be what kind of group, it’s your own choice.

this is just an unconfirmed news.hoping that everybody will be fine and well.SJ has nothing to do with it coz they are there to perform and make thier fans happy.Sj will be upset if all the nonsense blame will be thrown to them.be realistic people, broaden your mind and be sensitive enough.
Comment by samantha maurine— May 31, 2010 #
SJ is a superstar all over asia.ITS THE TRUTH.so everytime they will perform there should be enough securities that could protect the stars and the fans. The main reason of SJ coming to different countries in ASia is to be with thier fans as well as, SJ wants them to be happy.THEY SHOULD NOT BE BLAMED FOR ANY INCIDENT THAT WOULD OCCUR during the performance time.IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ORGANIZERS….be well sj
